Possibly rescued, as a movie has now been slated with Denis Villeneuve of Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune fame directing once Dune Part 2 is complete. It's unlikely that it's going to leave development hell any time soon given Hollywood's and moviegoer's preference for sci-fi "action" movies something that Rama is decidedly not. They have been adamant upon not compromising the material to be more marketable and appeal to the Lowest Common Denominator, which more often than not, happens with most Science Fiction adaptations. Both report the difficulties in getting a good script.
But one of the biggest problems is the very nature of the story. Development Hell: Morgan Freeman and David Fincher were trying to make The Film of the Book happen since the late 1990s.
